Volleyball Wins District Finale

Big Lake, TX – Fears of the Lady Cougars prematurely eyeing the playoffs were put to rest as the volleyball team celebrated a three-set victory (25-10, 25-19, 25-18) over Reagan County in the district finale for Compass Academy on Saturday morning.

The Lady Cougars (6-2) will be second place representatives, just one game behind Sonora (6-1) in the District 5-3A standings.  The rest of the district teams will play their final regular season games on Tuesday.

For Compass Academy, it was a solid team win with duties getting split and several girls stepping up.  Carleigh Jones led in kills with 12, followed by Laci Satterwhite (8) and Kinzee Jamierson (5).  Haley Stillwell and Jamierson each served up three aces.  Stillwell topped the stats in assists with 11, with Paige Jones handing out nine and Aubrey Moler added six.  Defensively, the digs were evenly spread.

Compass opened the first set with a quick 6-1 lead and extended that to 13-3.  Reagan County battled back to stay within eight points.  Lou Lou Molinar led the next Lady Cougar charge with a pair of aces en route to  a 22-8 advantage.  Paige Jones would close out the set with a power shot at the fighting Owl defense, but they were unable to return the volley for a 25-10 Compass win.

Reagan County displayed a more competitive effort in the second set and stayed within two points through much of the set.  The back-and-forth affair had five lead changes with the contest remaining deadlocked at 7-7, 14-14, and 19-19.  Team Blue went on a four-point run for a 24-19 edge, and Laci Satterwhite posted the final point for the 25-19 victory.  Compass led two sets to none.

Much like the first frame, the Lady Cougars got out in front and stayed ahead through the third and final set.  A 6-1 lead became 9-5 until Haley Stillwell led Compass for four consecutive points to push the lead to 13-5.  The Fighting Owls made a valiant effort and rallied back to trail 22-17, but failed to get any closer as the Lady Cougars completed the sweep with a 25-18 decision to end the match.

Compass Academy (6-2, 15-10) will open the state playoff run on Tuesday, November 2.  The Lady Cougars are set to meet Jim Ned in Sterling City for the Bi-District game.  Start time still pending.
