Lady Cougars Gain Momentum

Odessa, TX – Compass Academy’s volleyball team took one more step toward the Class 3A state playoffs by sweeping district foe Coahoma (25-11, 25-17, 25-9) on Tuesday in the Comstock Sports Center.

The afternoon opened with the Lady Cougars’ JV squad rolling past Coahoma (25-20, 25-14) in two straight sets.  Compass Academy’s first senior volleyball player Kinzee Jamierson was then recognized by teachers, coaches, and the student body.  The Cougar band was also in attendance to provide the school spirit sounds.  The unveiling of her letter jacket was a nice finishing touch… and it looked pretty sharp, as well!

The Lady Cougars came out firing on all cylinders and looked completely ready for the upcoming playoff run.  Carleigh Jones led the charge for Compass, recording eight kills, a block, and an ace.  Paige Jones finished with three kills, 13 assists, and a block.  Defensively, Lou Lou Molinar turned in seven digs.  Kyra Ayers had five kills and two digs in the winning effort.

Compass jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first set.  A short exchange of serves by both teams pushed the score to 12-5. That’s when the Lady Cougars opened up the match.  Haley Stillwell led the first surge with four consecutive points for a 16-5 advantage, and Carleigh Jones led a six-point run for Coahoma to land on the short end of a 25-11 decision.

Team Blue pounced the visitors again in the second set.  After building an 8-2 lead, Stillwell served up a three-point boost and Jamierson extended the deficit to 15-6 with four consecutive points.  Coahoma found a rhythm of their own and chipped away at the margin of difference to 17-11.  Compass regained the upper hand to take the second set 25-17.

It was all-hands-on-deck in the final match, and it continued to be dominated by the Lady Cougars.  Camille Kubacak showed her defensive strength by donating three blocks and three kills. Paige Jones kept hammering away from the serve line, leading two charges that gave the Lady Cougars a quick 18-8 advantage.  Aubrey Moler joined in with three assists.  The 10-point lead became a 23-9 lead and then a 25-9 victory to end the contest in three straight sets.

Compass Academy (5-2, 14-10) will close out the District 5-3A schedule with a trip to Big Lake, taking on Reagan County on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.  *There will be no JV game.  As they say – Never look beyond your next opponent.  We will be posting Bi-District playoff information… after Saturday’s district finale.
