Cougars Collect Sweep In Crane

Crane, TX – The Lady Cougars finished this week’s road tour with a three-set sweep of the Crane Ladybirds (25-19, 25-15, 25-14) on Saturday morning.

After Tuesday’s trip to Sonora and today’s victory in Crane, Odessa Compass Academy maintains its second place spot in the District 5-3A standings with two games left on the regular season schedule.  The Lady Cougars put together a solid performance – on the attack and defensively – throughout the morning.

Paige Jones led the charge for Compass, recording nine assists, five kills, four blocks, and an ace.  Carleigh Jones finished with six kills, three blocks, and a pair of aces, while Camille Kubacak had three blocks and two kills.  Haley Stillwell added four assists and two digs in the winning effort.

The Ladybirds stayed competitive in the early stages of all three sets, but in each match the Lady Cougars took control midway in and extended their lead.  In the first set, a 7-7 tie would dissolve after Kyra Ayers served up a three-point surge.  Following a Paige Jones dig, Compass would take a five-point advantage at 13-8.  Crane fought back to narrow the difference to 14-11.  After a few volleys and digs, Kinzee Jamierson served up four consecutive points for a 23-16 Cougar edge.  Jones finished it off for a 25-19 set.

Crane would watch an 11-11 exchange turn into a bevy of Team Blue scores in the second set.  Jones pushed the deficit to 17-11 with five straight serves, and Stillwell followed with another string of four consecutive points to take the set 25-15.

The third and final set began with Compass jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead.  Crane went on a five-point run to cut the lead to 8-6.  The Lady Cougars regained the momentum behind Stillwell to own a 12-7 tally.  The highlight to the session featured a big league block by Kubacak and high-velocity return from Paige Jones.  Ayers extended the lead to 17-9, and Carleigh Jones pushed it to 23-12.  Stillwell served the match point for the 25-14 decision.

The Lady Cougars (4-2, 13-10) will return to the Comstock Sports Center to host Coahoma (3-2, 17-9) for Senior Night on Tuesday, October 19.  The junior varsity will take the court at 5:00 p.m. and the varsity will follow at 6:00 p.m.
