Volleyball Hands Owls Sweep

Odessa, TX – The Lady Cougars volleyball team made short work of Reagan County, sweeping the Lady Owls (25-9, 25-12, 25-10) in District 5-3A action at the Comstock Athletics Complex on Tuesday.

Compass Academy turned in a solid performance for three quick sets.  While Paige Jones dished out six aces, five kills and 15 assists, Carleigh Jones added three aces and seven kills to aid in the district victory.  Haley Stillwell donated five assists and three more aces in the ‘Pink Out’ win.

The Lady Cougars opened the first set with a 5-1 lead.  After Reagan County narrowed the deficit to 5-3, Madison Molinar guided Compass on a seven-point run to push the difference to 13-3.  The Lady Owls answered with a couple of volley points to try to minimize the damage, but it would be short lived.  With Stillwell serving, the hosting Lady Cougars tacked up four more points for a 20-7 advantage.  Kinzee Jaimerson led the next charge for a convincing 25-9 win.

Compass came out roaring in the second set, which included a pair of aces by Paige Jones, en route to a 7-0 lead.  Reagan County managed to answer that with three points to narrow the gap to 7-3.  The two teams exchanged volley points until the Lady Cougars expanded an 11-6 edge into a 16-7 lead.  Carleigh Jones would engineer another surge for Compass to finish the set 25-12.

The Lady Owls gave their best effort in the third set, but that would soon evaporate midway into the set.  With the score 12-5 and then 13-8, an ace by Carleigh Jones would ignite fireworks as Compass extended its lead to 18-10.  A seven-point run, with Paige Jones serving, brought an end to the set and match.  The Lady Cougars finished the contest just as strong as they had started to take the final set 25-10.

The win concludes the first half of the scheduled district games.  Compass (3-1) will begin the second half of the 5-3A slate next Tuesday with a road trip to Sonora (3-0) on October 12.  The Lady Cougars are currently a half game behind the Lady Broncos.  Sonora plays Reagan County this Saturday at noon.

In the early action, the Cougar junior varsity scored a two-game sweep over the visiting Owls.
