Odessa, TX – After falling behind two sets, the Lady Cougars battled back before suffering a 3-1 non-district loss (17-25, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25) to Sweetwater at the Comstock Athletic & Fine Arts Center on Friday afternoon.
Compass Academy was led by junior Carleigh Jones, recording nine kills on the day. Paige Jones followed with six of her own. Defensively, Madison Molinar and Kyra Ayers each recorded 14 digs for 28 of the 69 digs during the four sets. Paige Jones led in assists with 14, and Haley Stillwell donated another four.
The Lady Cougars and Mustangs exchanged leads in the opening set. Sweetwater went on a five-point run to gain the advantage to take the first set 25-17. Compass kept stride in the second set before the Lady Mustangs pushed forward to take a 16-13 lead. The back-and-forth affair eventually went Sweetwater’s way with four consecutive points to claim a 25-21 two-set lead.
Compass jumped out to a quick five-point lead in the third stanza. In another very competitive match, the Lady Cougars maintained the three-point buffer to battle back for a 25-22 win to stay alive but trail two sets to one. Both teams put together solid performances, though their coaches may be quick to point out things that will need to be cleaned up before the district matches begin. Sweetwater ended the afternoon with a 25-20 decision to take the fourth set and match.
The contest finishes out the non-district slate of games for the Lady Cougars. Compass will now prepare of the district home opener against Sonora on Saturday, September 25. The Junior Varsity is scheduled for a 11:00 a.m. start, with the Varsity to follow at high noon.
