Cross Country Cougars Advance

Crane, TX – The District 5-3A Cross Country Championship was hosted at the Crane County Golf Course on Monday. In a strong showing, the Lady Cougars secured second place to advance to the regional meet in two weeks.  Dakota Stratton out of the boys division will be joining them.

Teams in attendance were from Compass Academy, Coahoma, Reagan County, Sonora, Stanton, and the event host Crane.  The varsity girls ran the two-mile course. Predominately a sophomore team, the Lady Cougars finished in second place with 49 points, ten behind Crane (39) in the team standings.  Three Compass runners – Mandy Dobbs (12:47.69), Bailey Jones (13:06.22), and Madison Johnson (13:31.30) – nailed down the second, third, and sixth spots of the Top 10 in the division.

Coahoma (64) finished in third place to secure the final spot advancing to the regionals, with Sonora (94), Stanton (110), and Reagan County (146) rounding out the group.  Coahoma will send two and Stanton will add one to the trip to the Hub City.  Chloe Harshbarger crossed the finish line in 14th place and Hannah Padillo was 24th out of 37 runners in the field.

In the boys varsity 5K run, Crane nabbed the top three spots to lead the Golden Cranes to the district title with 21 points.  Sonora’s Hunter O’Banon and Fernando Gonzalez were fourth and sixth respectively to secure the number two team spot for the Broncos with 62 team points.  Both schools qualified for the regional meet.

Reagan County (79) edged out Compass Academy (80) by a single point to take final qualifying spot.  The Cougars’ Stratton, a senior, placed eighth to earn his spot for the trip to the Mae Simmons Park course in Lubbock.  Freshman David White (12th), junior Austin Spruill (17th), and sophomore Logan Gilley (20th) all finished in the boys varsity Top 20.  Logan Donham was 23rd and Conner Harrison placed 26th.

In girls junior varsity action, freshman Lilly Hulsey placed fourth with a time of 15:37.43. Sophomore Amberlynn Glasscock finished in seventh place and Alyssa Holmes, also a sophomore, came in eleventh.  Gavin Perez and Jacob Prieto placed fourth and fifth in the JV boys group.  Ryder Sanchez was seventh.

The top three team finishers and top 10 individuals from today’s district meet will advance to the Class 3A Region I Cross Country Meet that will held on October 25.
